As per a recent publication, however, that honor should go to a mechanised timber mill invented through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Before automated sawing, constructing a simple merchant vessel necessitated approximately 10 sawyers working over three months,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-driven sawmills, the same quantity of cut lumber could be manufactured within seven days.”
Owing to this rapid automated cutter, that turned timber to boards using almost no manual labor, the Dutch were able to build vessels faster compared to anyone else, which sparked one hundred years of Dutch maritime, economic and cultural supremacy in Europe and the globe.
The Original Genuine Manufacturing Device
The inventor's sawmill, contends the writer, was “humanity’s initial true industrial apparatus.” A windmill rotated a wheel. One component converted its circular motion to vertical action to power the saw. A separate mechanism transformed that same rotary movement into a sideway’s movement feeding the log to the blade. A ratchet system shifted the wood forward a measured step each stroke.
“Each element was modest by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance was to combine these parts so the machine operated within a perfectly controlled order, sawing with each downward stroke and moving with each return stroke. This constituted a remarkably clever use of basic components.”
