At least 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these national projects.
