British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he said. "They were among thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "major assault" on Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Iraq and Syria.
