Cowboys Owner Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Accidental’ Offensive Signal at Fans

The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he describes as an “inadvertent” obscene gesture directed at attendees during a Sunday’s game at the Jets’ stadium.

Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.

“That was regrettable. It was kind of an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a large group of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

Jones additionally emphasized that the signal was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”

League Precedent for Proprietor Fines

This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples involve:

  • Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
  • Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty manageable for the wealthy owner.

Offseason Controversies and Media Spotlight

The incident comes after a controversial preseason for Jones, who faced widespread criticism from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded key defensive player Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Moreover, Jones was a central subject in a Netflix documentary that explored his influence in building the Dallas franchise into the world’s most valuable sports franchise, even with its recent championship drought.

The league’s action to penalize Jones highlights its ongoing effort to maintain proper behavior among all franchise representatives, irrespective of their position or financial standing.
