Space Traveler Reveals Depression After Wave of Online Abuse Following Journey

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, such as increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating spacecraft departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the edge of space.

The group of women also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.

The company behind the flight is a private space firm established by a Amazon founder.
