Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the right to contest specific decisions from the official, mirroring the system already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
